George Pissarro and Giorgio Morandi in NYC this past weekend
September 25th, 2008
Just went to NYC over this past weekend to attend the opening for my dear friend George Pissarro who unexpectedly and very sadly passed away on Aug 1st, 3 days short of his 58th birthday. George was a painter and an outstanding sculptor of stone, wood and clay. The marbles and woods were sensuous and made for a strong presence to engage with , just beautiful but there were hardly any paintings hanging. The exhibit was poorly curated ; not enough sculptures and George was a very prolific carver , also why were there so few paintings on display? and then the lighting was very poor.. I think the organisers rushed this exhibit and i sincerely regret they did as well as George would have.
Of course, went and saw the Giorgio Morandi exhibit at the Met . For the last 30 years , I have been a devoted admirer of Morandi’s work and most fortunate to have had the opportunity to see, again , a body of his work . I loved being surrounded and looking @ the Morandi paintings , he is an artist that inspires me over and over and inevitably I felt like rushing home and painting . Yet ,somehow the exhibit fell short of my expectations…. Yes, there were numerous early paintings as well as landscapes but hardly any prints and not a very comprehensive showing of his still life. The Guggenheim exhibit of approx. 30 years ago and the Musee d Art Moderne (in Paris) exhibit a few years back were much more comprehensive exhibits .
